NewsWhip’s powerful API provides a unique way of displaying and analysing content. Here’s an explanation of the service, and examples of our API in action for news companies and others.

What is an API?

API stands for Application Programming Interface – a way to plug one data service or software into another. Commercial websites share part of their code with developers so people can build tools and widgets (apps) for their site. Common uses of APIs include the miniature Google maps on company websites (supplied by  Google Maps’ API) and any app or website that lets you log in with Facebook, skipping sign-up.

It’s one of the key features of Web 2.0 and simplifies online tools and sites, while providing information when we need it.

What does NewsWhip’s API do?

At NewsWhip, we provide a real time API with data from Spike, our platform that ranks the world’s most engaging content.
Spike provides marketers and newsrooms with a real time view of the stories engaging the world. Users can zoom into any topic (like American Football, Politics, or even Mining) and expose the stories getting shared and talked about in real time.

NewsWhip’s API in Action

Sponsored Content Hub

NewsWhip created this microsite using data from our API for the Guardian (sponsored by Three Mobile). The information from Spike provides the fastest-spreading Guardian stories, with time views from 1 to 24 hours. Within 1 hour view Guardian readers can see the next big viral story as it emerges. The 24 hour view shows which stories have been engaging people for the past day. The microsite drew a high level of engagement, with readers staying on the page for 3 minutes longer than average news story (over a standard month).

Internal dashboards

NewsWhip’s API can also be used to power internal analytics dashboards for publishers and brands. Third parties can use the information from Spike to track performance over time while also following live conversations around a story, giving a real time view on the content engaging the world. This internal monitoring software provide the company with a 360 degree social news radar.

Mobile Apps

The data from the API can be turned into a display for a mobile app showing the most shared news stories in any area of interest. This example on the right shows a screenshot of an app built using NewsWhip’s API and displaying the most viral news stories in India.

Trending data

Trend data monitors the output of content using NewsWhip’s API to give valuable insights on the topics and stories driving conversations around the world. It’s a learning tool that moves you from guesswork to knowing what works by taking in over 20,000 sources and 200,000 stories every day.

Our API can be used to harvest and gather data on the stories and content that’s engaging people on social networks. News companies can use this data for long term strategic planning and also for short term daily insights and editorials.

Here’s a screenshot of a portion of a spreadsheet that populates daily, using NewsWhip’s API, showing Mashable’s top stories of the day.

Social Distribution Ranking and Reports

The social data from NewsWhip’s API can be added to internal benchmarking to review the effectiveness of social media. This is an excellent way for publishers to demonstrate the level of social engagement with their audience to advertisers and partners. NewsWhip’s data provides an independent verification of social distribution for leading publishers and digital marketers.

NewsWhip’s API data allows PR and marketing firms to find the most socially engaged sites and platforms for placing stories, allowing communicators to zero in on their most engaged audience.
