As we recently hit the halfway point of 2023, we took the opportunity to look back on the top publishers in Singapore over the past three months to see who came out on top in Q2 2023.

Our rankings are determined by using NewsWhip’s Spike and API technology, which sums the aggregated likes, shares, and comments on content produced by the outlets in the rankings.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the data. Before we begin, it’s worth noting that this analysis was covering English-language only publication.

Singapore’s top publishers in Q2 2023

The Straits Times — an English-language daily broadsheet newspaper — claimed the top spot on the top websites chart once again with 3.2M engagements. Mothership.sg, which was only launched in 2014, followed closely behind with 2.7M engagements, while channelnewsasia.com (CNA) secured third place with 1.7M engagements.

The Straits Times’ success this year can be attributed to their publication of a diverse range of stories. Their top story was about an employee at a Chinese company winning 365 days of paid leave (25.5k), while the rest of the top three articles included stories of a woman’s journey to the hospital after her water broke (25.4k), and a dog resembling the beloved cartoon character, Snoopy (23.2k). The newspaper’s versatility has proven to be a key factor in engaging readers and contributing to their success thus far.

Mothership also had a variety in their stories with articles, with some of them having higher levels of engagement when compared to The Straits Times. Their top three articles included stories about a Singaporean boy with autism celebrating Hari Raya with his classmates (36.2k), a wealthy lady in China who washes dishes to pass the time (30.6k), and an owl resembling a fluffball (28.8k).

CNA’s most popular stories focused on Singapore swimmer Quah Ting Wen being named best athlete (8.8k), and Cristiano Ronaldo’s visit to Singapore (8.6k).

The top articles in Singapore during 2023

Singapore’s top article overall was AsiaOne’s article about South Korean actor Lee Do-hyun being seen in Sentosa’, generating some 39.4k engagements. The previously mentioned Mothership article about the Singaporean boy with autism celebrating Hari Raya followed closely behind with 36.2k engagements. In third place, the other Mothership article about a wealthy lady in China who washes dishes to pass the time garnered 30.6k engagements.

Interestingly, three of the top ten articles revolved around celebrities from the Korean entertainment industry, including Lisa from Blackpink, Lee Do-hyun, and Lee Seung Gi.

These stories showcased the celebrities’ presence at particular destinations, highlighting the immense popularity of stars in Korean entertainment across several Asian countries.

The remaining articles in the rankings included narratives about Singapore’s powerlifter Farhannah Farid and the new Mercedes car model.
