Jogger Mauled by God

Authorities in Mobile, Alabama, are trying to calm the local running community after a vicious god attack left a jogger bloodied and terrified. Theo Jenkins, 39, was running around 6:30 a.m. through a residential community in Mobile when the attack occurred. "It's my usual morning route," Jenkins told reporters after his release from a local hospital. "Very quiet. Barely even any traffic. This really came out of nowhere. Almost from nothingness, I guess you could say. Then, bam. Fear came upon...

What To Do If You Get Injured During Taper

Hi, I'm in the last week of tapering for my first half marathon, my problem/question is that I did my last long run and I was fine, over the next three days at work I strained my legs lifting, so I did a few shorter runs (6,7, and 12K) but I'm still sore/stiff. My race is in four days and my instincts tell me to sit it out until race morning and take it easy until I’m good and warmed up. What would you suggest? Thank you Dave Dear Dave,

Oscar Pistorius Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

Oscar Pistorius was sentenced on Tuesday to five years in prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in his South African home in February 2013. The sentence concludes one of the most widely watched courtroom trials in recent history. Pistorius, the double amputee who ran with prosthetic lower limbs and became an Olympic 400-meter runner, was convicted last month of “culpable homicide,” akin to negligent homicide or manslaughter, and could have faced a sentence as long as...

Oscar Pistorius sentenced to five years in prison

Track and field star Oscar Pistorius on Tuesday was sentenced by a South African judge to five years in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Judge Thokozile Masipa cited “gross negligence” after the double-amputee shot Steenkamp multiple times through a bathroom door in the 2013 death. In September, Pistorius was found not guilty of murder but still faced these lesser negligent killing charges. According to legal experts cited by The Associated Press, Judge Maispa’s sentencing is a...

Networks encourage fans to watch their competitors

Please watch another channel. That encouragement is popping up more and more during sports broadcasts. Viewers tuning into the National League Championship Series on Fox Sports 1 saw an ad behind the batter promoting the ALCS on TBS, and vice versa. Sure, they're helping the competition, network executives say. They also believe they're helping themselves.

Japanese Typhoon Leads to Medals Mishap at Columbus Marathon

If, as the butterfly effect posits, a butterfly flapping its wings in China can cause a hurricane elsewhere, what effect might a typhoon in Japan have on an American road race? In the case of last Sunday's Columbus Marathon, it meant about one sixth of the field not receiving their medals upon finishing, race director Darris Blackford explains on the race's blog.

The Trouble with Cheap Treadmills

If you want a quality indoor ride, be prepared to shell out the big bucks. "When you spend less than $500, or even $1,000, you're really just buying a disposable treadmill," says Jon Stevenson, the co-owner of Treadmill Doctor, who has spent 30 years installing and repairing 'mills for individuals, gyms, and hotels worldwide. "If you use it consistently, you'll be lucky to get a year out of it." Shop in the $1,000 to $2,000 range, he says, and you get quality or features; drop more than $2K, and...

How Does Treadmill Running Affect my Shoes?

"A treadmill is generally gentler on shoes" than the road is, says Runner's World shoe guru Martyn R. Shorten, Ph.D. "The surface is less abrasive, so the outsole lasts longer, and the added cushioning reduces the compaction rate of the shoe's cushioning. The only potential negative is that because steps are more consistent, wear may be more focused in particular areas. For treadmill running, I generally suggest people use shoes with flat or 'low-profile' outsoles--there's no need for aggressive...
